Thailand visa for Canadians: do you need one?

No. Canadians do not need a tourist visa for a stay in Thailand of up to 30 days. The Government of Canada's travel advice and Thailand's own list, in force since 15 September 2026, agree. Make sure your passport is valid for 6 months, carry a return or onward ticket and enough funds, and complete the free TDAC.

Visa rules for a tourist visit

Canada is on the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of countries whose citizens can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days, effective 15 September 2026.

The Government of Canada's Thailand travel advice (updated 13 October 2026) says the same: a tourist visa is not required for stays of up to 30 days.

How long you can stay

You can stay up to 30 days. The Government of Canada says you can ask the Immigration Office in Thailand to extend your stay by up to 30 more days, at the officer's discretion. Thai embassy sources say the same.

What to have ready

  • Passport: the Government of Canada says it must be valid at least 6 months upon entry into Thailand.
  • Return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds: the Government of Canada says you may be asked to show them.
  • How much money: the Government of Canada gives no amount, and Thai official sources differ. The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington (updated 17 September 2026) says 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (6 July 2026, updated 15 August 2026) says 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family for certain visa-exempt cases.
  • Fees: the Government of Canada lists no fee for visa-free entry, and the TDAC arrival card is free.

The arrival form

Thailand requires the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), submitted within 3 days before you arrive. It is free on the official Thai Immigration website, and we cover it step by step on its own page.

Recent and upcoming changes

  • 15 September 2026: the 30-day tourist visa exemption replaced the previous 60-day exemption. Travellers who were already in Thailand keep the stay they were given. The Government of Canada's advice already shows 30 days.
  • Proposed, not confirmed: a 450 baht entry fee for foreign tourists from early 2027, according to a Thai Government Public Relations Department headline of 17 August 2026. It has not been confirmed as approved and has no confirmed start date.
