Mexico visa for Germans: do you need one?
No. Germans do not need a visa for a tourist trip to Mexico and can stay up to 180 days, but the immigration officer decides how many days you get. Travel on a passport, not your ID card, and carry your return ticket, proof of accommodation and enough money for your stay.

Visa rules for a tourist visit
Germany's Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) says in its travel advice for Mexico (as of 26 October 2026) that German citizens do not need a visa for tourism, transit or business trips of up to 180 days. Mexico's foreign ministry (SRE) also lists Germany among the countries whose citizens can visit without a visa.
Mexico's consulates say visa-free entry covers tourism, transit and business visits, as long as you do not do paid work in Mexico.
You must travel on a passport. The Auswärtiges Amt says a regular passport (Reisepass), a temporary passport (vorläufiger Reisepass) or a children's passport (Kinderreisepass) is accepted, but the German ID card (Personalausweis) is not. It also says travel documents must be in good condition.
How long you can stay
The maximum is 180 days, and Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) says you cannot go beyond it. According to the Auswärtiges Amt, the Mexican authorities grant between 1 and 180 days based on what you say at entry, so you may be given fewer days than you planned.
On extensions, the Auswärtiges Amt says you can ask the INM, before your granted stay runs out, to extend it to a total of up to 180 days, but that "there is no entitlement" to this and extensions are rarely granted. Plan your trip within the days you are given.
What to have ready
- Passport validity: the sources disagree. Mexico's consulates say Mexico does not require a minimum validity period, only that your passport is valid when you enter and for your whole stay. The Auswärtiges Amt and the German Embassy in Mexico say it must be valid for at least six months on entry. A passport with six months left meets both.
- A return ticket that matches the length of stay you give at entry, and money to cover your stay. The Auswärtiges Amt says the Mexican authorities recommend carrying both without being asked. It gives no amount.
- Proof of accommodation. The German Embassy in Mexico advises showing your passport, proof of accommodation and your return ticket without being asked. Mexico's consulates say the officer may ask for hotel bookings and your return or onward itinerary.
- If you are visiting Quintana Roo (Cancún, Tulum and nearby): the state's VISITAX, which its official site says is mandatory for all foreign tourists. We could not confirm the current amount from an official source.
The arrival form
Mexico's official immigration form is the Forma Migratoria Múltiple electrónica (FMME), and the online form is required if you arrive by land. The Auswärtiges Amt agrees: air travellers no longer need the paper FMM tourist card, while land travellers need a paid tourist card that can be applied for online. Recent and upcoming changes
- On 18 December 2025, the Quintana Roo government said it is reworking how VISITAX is collected and that the tax will not be collected through hotels and other lodging. No new amount or start date had been announced when we checked.
- The Auswärtiges Amt warns that entry rules can change at short notice. It had not announced any specific change when we checked.
