Mexico visa for British citizens: do you need one?

No. British citizens do not need a visa to visit Mexico as tourists and can stay up to 180 days, but the days you are actually allowed are shown in your passport stamp. Check your passport validity, carry proof of onward travel and money for your stay, and plan for Quintana Roo's entry tax if you are heading to Cancún or Tulum.

Visa rules for a tourist visit

The UK government's travel advice for Mexico (updated 20 October 2026) says: "If you're visiting Mexico as a tourist, you do not need a visa." Mexico's foreign ministry (SRE) also lists the United Kingdom among the countries whose citizens can visit without a visa.

According to Mexican consulates, visa-free entry covers tourism, transit and business visits, as long as you do not do paid work in Mexico.

How long you can stay

GOV.UK describes 180 days as "the longest you can stay in Mexico as a tourist", and Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) sets the same limit. The immigration officer decides your actual stay, and the number of days you are allowed is shown in your passport stamp, so check it when you arrive.

GOV.UK does not cover extensions and we could not confirm the Mexican rules, so plan to leave within the days you are given.

What to have ready

  • Passport validity: GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay and that the Mexican Embassy recommends at least 180 days' validity. Mexican consulates say there is no minimum validity period as long as the passport is valid for your whole stay. These do not contradict each other: the rule is validity for your stay, and 180 days is a recommendation.
  • A return or onward ticket: GOV.UK says you may need to show one.
  • Enough money for your stay: GOV.UK says you may need to show this too.
  • Hotel reservations, which Mexican consulates say the immigration officer may ask for.
  • Quintana Roo entry tax (VISITAX): GOV.UK says it is payable online if you visit the state, which includes Cancún and Tulum. Neither GOV.UK nor the official VISITAX site showed an amount when we checked.

The arrival form

Mexico's official immigration form is the Forma Migratoria Múltiple electrónica (FMME). It is required if you arrive by land, in line with GOV.UK's advice that land arrivals must fill in an online immigration form, and our separate Mexico form page links to the official INM form.

Recent and upcoming changes

  • On 18 December 2025, the Quintana Roo government said it is reworking how VISITAX is collected and that the tax will not be collected through hotels and other lodging. No new amount or start date had been announced when we checked.

Common questions

Do British citizens need a visa for Mexico?
No, not as tourists. GOV.UK and Mexico's foreign ministry both say British tourists can visit without a visa, for up to 180 days.
How many days will I get in Mexico?
Up to 180 days, but the immigration officer decides. The number of days you are allowed is shown in your passport stamp.
Does my passport need 6 months' validity for Mexico?
Not as a rule. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay. GOV.UK notes that the Mexican Embassy recommends at least 180 days' validity, while Mexican consulates say there is no minimum.
Do I need to pay a tourist tax in Cancún?
Yes. GOV.UK says Quintana Roo's entry tax is payable online, and the state's VISITAX site says it is mandatory for all foreign tourists. The collection scheme is being reworked and we could not confirm the amount.

Entry rules can change at short notice, and the border officer makes the final decision. Before you travel, check Mexico's official immigration website or your own government's travel advice.
