Visa rules for a tourist visit

The US State Department says a visa is required for Indonesia and points you to Indonesia's official e-visa site to apply for a 30-day visa. The United States is on Indonesia's list of countries eligible for the visa on arrival (VOA), which you can get online in advance as an e-VOA or at the counter at designated airports and seaports.

Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration lists the fee as IDR 500,000 on its e-VOA page (no date shown, checked 27 Oct 2026). It is a single-entry visa for a 30-day stay, and the page gives a visa validity of 90 days.

How long you can stay

The visa on arrival is valid for a 30-day stay. To stay longer, Indonesia's immigration authority says you must apply for an extension at an Immigration Office while you are in Indonesia.

The Yogyakarta Immigration Office explains that the visa on arrival can be extended once while you are in the country, for another 30 days, giving a total stay of 60 days. The extension fee is IDR 500,000 and you can apply from 14 days before your current stay expires (page posted 24 Aug 2022, updated 4 Nov 2025).

Do not overstay: the US State Department warns that the overstay fine is 1,000,000 rupiah per day.

What to have ready

  • A passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Indonesia (Indonesian regulation and the US State Department).
  • Two blank passport pages, according to the US State Department. Official sources disagree on this: the UK government also says at least 2, the Government of Canada says at least one, and we found no Indonesian official figure. Two free pages is the safe choice.
  • A booked return flight. The State Department says the e-visa application requires one, and Indonesia's e-VOA page advises you to carry a printed return ticket because an officer may ask for it.
  • The visa fee of IDR 500,000, paid online for the e-VOA or at the counter for the visa on arrival.
  • If you visit Bali, the Bali tourist levy: the Bali Provincial Government charges Rp 150,000 per person, once per trip, paid cashless online through Love Bali or at the counters at Bali's airport and port. The State Department mentions the levy too.

The arrival form

You also need All Indonesia, the official arrival declaration that combines immigration, customs and health questions. It is free and mandatory, you fill it in within the 72 hours before you arrive, and we have a separate page that walks you through it.

Recent and upcoming changes

  • The Bali tourist levy is set by Bali Provincial Regulation No. 2 of 2025, which amends Regulation No. 6 of 2023, and by Governor Regulation No. 25 of 2025.
