Indonesia visa for Japanese citizens: do you need one?
Yes, Japanese citizens need a visa for Indonesia. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that visa-free entry is currently suspended for Japanese nationals, so you need a visa on arrival or an e-VOA applied for online in advance. It costs IDR 500,000 for a 30-day stay and can be extended once by 30 days, and you also fill in the free All Indonesia arrival declaration.

Visa rules for a tourist visit
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (updated 30 Sep 2025) notes that visa-free entry to Indonesia is currently suspended for Japanese nationals. It says Japanese citizens staying up to 30 days for tourism, business or business talks can enter by getting a visa on arrival (VOA). Japan is on the eligible list on Indonesia's official e-VOA page, so you can also apply online before you travel, and it is not on Indonesia's visa-free list published by the Ministry of Tourism.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not give the fee. Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration lists the visa on arrival and e-VOA at IDR 500,000, single entry and valid for a 30-day stay, with a visa validity of 90 days (no date shown on the page, checked 27 Oct 2026). Card payment fees may be added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says paid work on a visa on arrival is prohibited. It also mentions a separate 7-day visa on arrival that is only issued at some offices in part of Riau Province, with no online application.
How long you can stay
The visa gives you 30 days, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it can be extended only once, by 30 days. How you extend depends on how you got the visa: Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a visa on arrival from the airport must be extended in person at the local immigration office, while an e-VOA extension can be applied for online. Indonesian immigration says you still have to visit the immigration office in person for your photo after paying online. Applying for a new e-VOA does not count as an extension.
Indonesia's official e-VOA page confirms that you cannot get a new visa on arrival while you are in Indonesia. The Yogyakarta Immigration Office adds that the extension gives a total stay of 60 days, costs IDR 500,000 and can be requested from 14 days before your stay expires (page posted 24 Aug 2022, updated 4 Nov 2025).
Do not overstay: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day, and an overstay of more than 60 days leads to deportation and a ban on re-entry.
What to have ready
- A passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Indonesia's official page counts the 6 months from the date of arrival.
- A return ticket. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not mention one, but Indonesia's e-VOA page advises carrying it printed because an immigration officer may ask for it.
- The visa fee of IDR 500,000, paid online for the e-VOA or at the counter on arrival.
- If you visit Bali, the Bali tourist levy: the Bali Provincial Government charges Rp 150,000 per person, once per trip, paid cashless through Love Bali or at the counters at Bali's airport and port.
The arrival form
