Visa rules for a tourist visit

The German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt, as of 26 Oct 2026) says the visa on arrival costs 500,000 IDR and is valid for up to 30 days, and that you can also apply and pay online for the e-VOA before you travel. Germany is on the eligible list on Indonesia's official page for the visa on arrival (VOA) and e-VOA. It is not on Indonesia's visa-free list published by the Ministry of Tourism.

Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration lists the visa on arrival and e-VOA at IDR 500,000, single entry and valid for a 30-day stay, with a visa validity of 90 days (no date shown on the page, checked 27 Oct 2026). Card payment fees may be added.

The Federal Foreign Office says you need a different visa for journalism, work, research or volunteering.

How long you can stay

The visa gives you 30 days. The Federal Foreign Office says it can be extended once by another 30 days, and that you have to apply in person at the local immigration office, where your biometric data is taken. It also warns about fraudulent visa agencies.

Indonesia's official e-VOA page confirms that a longer stay needs an extension at an Immigration Office, and that you cannot get a new visa on arrival while you are in Indonesia. The Yogyakarta Immigration Office adds that the extension gives a total stay of 60 days, costs IDR 500,000 and can be requested from 14 days before your stay expires (page posted 24 Aug 2022, updated 4 Nov 2025).

What to have ready

  • A passport (Reisepass) or children's passport (Kinderreisepass) valid for at least 6 months. The Federal Foreign Office counts this at both entry and exit, while Indonesia's official page counts 6 months from the date of arrival, so make sure your passport is still valid 6 months after you leave.
  • A temporary passport (vorläufiger Reisepass) is accepted if it is valid for 6 months. The German ID card (Personalausweis) is not accepted, and a children's passport only if it has not been extended or updated (Federal Foreign Office).
  • An onward or return ticket, which the Federal Foreign Office says is required. Indonesia's e-VOA page also advises carrying a printed return ticket because an immigration officer may ask for it.
  • The visa fee of IDR 500,000, paid online for the e-VOA or at the counter on arrival. The Federal Foreign Office states no minimum amount of money, but cash above IDR 100 million must be declared.
  • If you visit Bali, the Bali tourist levy of 150,000 IDR per person (Federal Foreign Office and the Bali Provincial Government), paid once per trip, cashless, online through Love Bali or at the counters at Bali's airport and port.

The arrival form

You also need All Indonesia, the official arrival declaration that combines immigration, customs and health questions. It is free and mandatory, you fill it in within the 72 hours before you arrive, and we have a separate page that walks you through it.

Recent and upcoming changes

  • The Federal Foreign Office says the All Indonesia declaration has been mandatory since October 2025.
  • The Bali tourist levy is set by Bali Provincial Regulation No. 2 of 2025, which amends Regulation No. 6 of 2023, and by Governor Regulation No. 25 of 2025.
