Japan visa for French citizens: do you need one?

No, French citizens do not need a visa to visit Japan as tourists for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid until the day you leave Japan, and the Embassy of Japan in France says you need an exit ticket and accommodation for at least your arrival day. Expect the JPY 3,000 departure tax when you leave.

Visa rules for a tourist visit

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists France in its visa exemption arrangements, with a period of stay of 90 days. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (travel advice updated 24 September 2026) says a stay of no more than 90 days does not require a visa beforehand, and the Embassy of Japan in France says holders of French passports can stay in Japan without a visa for up to 90 days.

The visa exemption does not cover paid work. There is currently no electronic travel authorisation for Japan, so you do not need to apply for anything before you travel.

How long you can stay

You can stay up to 90 days. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not list France among the countries whose arrangement allows longer stays, and the Embassy of Japan in France says your stay must not exceed 90 days.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs says a stay of more than 90 days needs a visa, applied for through the Embassy of Japan in Paris, and warns against overstaying, even by 24 hours.

What to have ready

  • A passport valid at least until your planned return date (Embassy of Japan in France). A non-biometric passport is accepted. The French ministry gives no minimum validity but warns that insufficient validity leads to refusal of entry.
  • A ticket to leave Japan, which you must have with you when you enter (Embassy of Japan in France).
  • Proof of accommodation for at least the day you arrive (Embassy of Japan in France).
  • No visa fee. Japan's International Tourist Tax of JPY 3,000 is charged when you leave and is usually included in your ticket price.

The arrival form

Visit Japan Web, the free official online service for immigration and customs procedures, is optional: you do not have to register to enter Japan, though the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs recommends completing it before you arrive. Our separate Visit Japan Web page explains how it works and how to avoid fake sites.

Recent and upcoming changes

  • 1 July 2026: Japan's International Tourist Tax rose from JPY 1,000 to JPY 3,000 per departure. The JPY 1,000 rate still applies to eligible tickets issued on or before 30 June 2026, and infants under 2 are exempt (Japan Tourism Agency and National Tax Agency).
  • JESTA: Japan passed a law creating JESTA, an electronic travel authorisation, on 29 May 2026. The Immigration Services Agency aims to introduce it in fiscal year 2028 (the law requires it to start by 31 March 2029), ahead of the original plan for 2030. No launch date or fee has been announced, and nothing is needed before you travel today.
